Sylvia M. Bangs
Born and raised in Gray, Me. I moved to Portland in 1959. Attended the School of Fine and Applied Arts for four years. I now reside in Portland ME.
My work has been widely exhibited throughout Maine and Massachusetts in Galleries and Art shows. I have had write ups in many state and local newspapers, including Maine Sunday Telegram. Have studied with nationally known oil and watercolorist Lawrence Sisson, New York and Maine artist John Muench, and James Elliot of Bath Maine.
The pen and ink drawings of Leonard Baskin of New England was a turning point in my work and I started drawing exclusively in black and white pen and ink, using extremely fine point Rapidograph pens. Now all my original drawings are size 18″x24″ and reflect a deep feeling of certain animals of New England and the world. Based on innate sense of design, texture, shapes, forms and circles I convey my message with a strong personal accent, pushing my drawings “to the edge” giving my work profound familiarity.
I am constantly seeking new textures and forms to incorporate into my surrealistic drawings, filling the whole with subconscious forms.
